Distance-wise, Pattadakal is 653km away from Mumbai. If you follow the road route down to Pattadakal, it could take you just over 9 hours. Pattadakal does not have any railway station. You need to take trains to either Sholapur or Hubli to finally access Pattadakal. You will find trains the most suitable for travel down to Pattadakal because of the various options and since it will be most comfortable! You can always hop into trains such as Madurai Express, Duran Express, Trivandrum Express or Nagercoil Express to get you to Sholapur. From Sholapur, you have 2 options: you can travel up to this UNESCO site by car or taxi!
If you have an overflowing wallet and it is around four of you travelling, you can actually hire an Indica for INR 2,700/- as return fare. Mind you, this vehicle will not be air-conditioned! If you care too much for AC in this simmering heat, try to pull in three others to make a total of 7 passengers. This way, you can hail an AC Indica for INR 3,500/- as return fare. You should of course check these fares closer to your date of travel! The other option is to again sit in a train from Sholapur and there are many to choose from. Sur Hubli Express will get you to Badami in 4.5 hours. This should be your preferred option as Badami is closest to Pattadakal and even by air it stands only 15 km away! You could instead be chugging along in the Golgumbaz Express all the way to Hubli in 8 long hours! Sur Dharwar Passenger and YPR AC Express both do the same route at different times.

You can consider exploring the Red Bus between Mumbai and Hubli which you will cover in almost 15 hours!! Are you prepared for that long a travel and that too by bus!! Be aware that this would cost you a full day! You can choose companies like National Travels, VRL Travels, Sharma Transports, Neeta Tours and Travels and Sea Bird Tourist. These come in AC, Non AC as well as Sleepers.
You will rarely find a bus between Mumbai and Badami though! So like you can see, there are so many routes to choose from that you now have no option or excuse! Stop being lazy and book yourself on one of these! Today!

How about a different type of trip? Maybe visit a nearby state that houses a UNESCO World Heritage site! Well to have to travel across only 277 km to witness this does not even take any planning! Yes, we are talking about the sleepy pretty village called Pattadakal in Karnataka! Just next door to Goa!

You will have left the Arabian Sea behind but what you will land near are the soothing cool breezes coming from the Malaprabha River in Bagalkot district! It will be different, very different from the palpable action in Goa but perhaps the right kind of change of scene for you! While you felt the sweltering in Goa, you will now be pleasantly surprised by the pitter-patter that will begin in Pattadakal to welcome you! What more can you ask for? Pick up that same backpack and move on! You will get there in a wink! Fun and frolic then and history and architecture now!

Pattadakal is 277km away from Goa. The road route takes less than 6 hours! Pattadakal does not have railway station. Hubli is the nearest train station connected to Goa. Trains to Hubli depart from a station in Goa called Madgaon. Train journeys on this route are known to be very scenic and enjoyable. Choose any trains among Vsg Howrah Express, Velankanni Express, Vsg Chennai Express, Vsg Sbc Link Express and Ypr Biweekly Express to reach Hubli.

For most of these, your travel time would range between 4.5 and 5 hours but for Vsg Sbc Link Express that will make you spend nearly 7 hours. Once you land in Hubli, it is a matter of 125km to Pattadakal that you can cover, as you like! You will have to undertake a road journey lasting a maximum of 2 hours.

It is up to you whether you wish to cover this by train, bus or a hired private vehicle. The distance is too short to give too much thought too! Just be sure you have some munchies and bottled water with you.

In case you are up for exploring Goa to Pattadakal all the way by car or taxi, that option is available too! You will be able to have a stop-over at Belgaum. From Goa, you could also consider Paulo travels bus service to Hubli. You could reserve 5 hours for this travel and then prepare for onwards travel from Hubli to Pattadakal. Paulo runs King Size AC Sleeper, Non AC Seater Sleeper, Non AC Sleeper and Volvo seater buses between Goa and Hubli. There are at least 5 such buses between Goa and Hubli. You should be prepared to shell out up to Rs. 550 for this route. So now that you have the full lowdown on all possible options and availability, you shouldn’t be waiting! Pack your bags or just extend your Goa trip to now include this sojourn! You will love it!

Bangalore to Pattadakal

Ah, why don’t you travel up the state to Pattadakal! On the banks of the great Malaprabha river, what a dreamy little hamlet it is! It has become a rather important tourist spot in recent times.

It sees moderate temperatures all year round but if you are looking at optimizing your trip weather-wise, I must advise you to choose anytime between October and February! It will make it that much more memorable! You’ll find one temple after another so that’ll make it a holy trip as well! Both in one shot!

Pattadakal lies a good 440km north of Bangalore. Do you want to take the road? Then you are looking at nearly 8 hours of journey! Best option in this case is to go with KSRTC. This company has a fleet of very comfortable buses with alert and reliable drivers who will safely take you across. They are a friendly and experienced lot and make it simple to book whether on the spot or in advance. Choose whatever suits you and jump onto the bus with an overnight bag full of goodies to munch along! Take friends along, the more the merrier! If it is a holy temple trip, then family accompanying you is simply fabulous! In case you are driving your own vehicle, best is to start from Bangalore very early in the morning say at about 4.30am. You will hit Badami by afternoon for sure so you can make a nice, stretched lunch layover there before proceeding to Pattadakal.

Since it is so hot these days, wouldn’t you rather travel quicker and in more comfort perhaps, like by train? Bad news is that takes almost as long!! And what is worse, Pattadakal does not even have a railway station it can call its own. You’ll travel through Badami and Aihole to reach Pattadakal. Badami, Sholapur Junction or Hubli Junctions are among 3 nearby train stations connected to Bangalore. If you alight at Badami, you can hail a taxi and it’ll ferry you to Pattadakal which is about 15 km away.

If are lucky, you may not have to wait beyond the press of a button and phew you’re on your way!

If you crank up your budget, you could even fly into Pattadakal but again remember that you have flights only up to say Hubli. Get there and arrange to get to Pattadakal. A one way ticket cold cost you up to Rs. 3150/- Whichever way, if you’ve set your mid to a getaway at Pattadakal, just go for it! Are you game?
