Omkareshwara Temple

T

his unique temple is located in Madikeri town.

Lingarajendra II, then then ruler of the region built this temple in 1820. The most peculiar thing about this temple dedicate to Lord Shiva is the architecture style of the temple.

The turrets at four corners and the domes resemble to the Islamic style construction. The temple complex is built around a massive rectangular pond.

In the middle of the pond is a pavilion connected with a causeway.

The circumstances that led to the construction of Omkareshwara temple too is interesting. According to the legends, the king killed a Brahmin (priest) to fulfill his political ambitions. The Brahmin's sprit then started haunting the king.

As a remedy to pacify the spirit the temple was built.

In you are in the Madikeri town square area, you can easily walk to the temple. This is a functioning temple that follows the regular puja timings (mornings and evenings).
