The two names – Ernakulam & Kochi – are often used interchangeably. In simple terms, Ernakulam is the name of the district, and Kochi is its metropolitan areas. Also once inside Kochi city, mention of Ernakulam refers to the downtown area inside Kochi City. By the way Cochin is the anglicised name of Kochi!

For booking Train Ticket, it’s Ernakulam. There two main stations are Ernakulam Junction(IRCTC Code:ERS) and Ernakulam Town (IRCTC Code:ERN)
For Bus booking, its Ernakulam.
Once you are inside Kochi city, you’ll hear two names frequently : Ernakulam & Fort Kochi. Here Ernakulam refer to the western part ( the downtown area ). Fort Kochi refers to the traditional city zone in the peninsular portion, across the harbour. Ernakulam is the eastern mainland zone.
