Pushkar Camel Fair

India’s Most Surreal Livestock & Spiritual Gathering

E

very year in the holy Hindu month of Kartik (October–November), the quiet desert town of Pushkar in Rajasthan transforms into a vibrant spectacle. Coinciding with Kartik Purnima (full moon), over 200,000 visitors and 50,000 camels, horses, and cattle converge for what is arguably the world’s most unique livestock fair.

In the lead-up, camel traders arrive early for serious business. As the official fair (RTDC Mela) begins, the focus shifts from trading to festivity. Expect a whirlwind of folk performances, mystics, musicians, turban-tying and moustache contests, camel races, and acrobatics—all set against a backdrop of dust, colour, and chaos.

At its spiritual core, the fair is about devotion. Pilgrims gather at the sacred Pushkar Lake to bathe during Kartik Purnima, believed to wash away sins. The final night, marked by floating lamps and prayers, is deeply moving.

Yes, it’s crowded, chaotic, and commercial—but utterly unforgettable. Bring earplugs and allergy meds, and you’re in for a true Rajasthan epic.

Arguably Rajasthan is one of the best sold destinations in India. That stands in stark contrast with the fact more than 70% of the state is part of the Thar Desert.
