In memory of the holy saint. The Tomb of Salim Chisti is made of white marble and is one of the best examples of mughal architecture in the country. It is located near the zanana roza and faces southward towards the Buland Darwaza. This tomb is the burial place of the sufi saint Sheikh Salim Chisti, whom Akbar revered.
Akbar is said to have been blessed with a son because of the Holy sufi saint. The saint lived an austere life in this building while he was alive.
The tomb was built by the emperor Akbar as a mark of his reverence and respect for the saint. The building of the mausoleum was completed in the year 1580 – 1581.
The Tomb of Salim Chisti is raised on a platform that is about a meter in height. The entrance porch can be reached by using the flight of five steps that lead to it. There are elegant marble screens which are built around the main tomb on all sides and tomb itself lies in the center of the main hall which has a single circular dome. There is an ebony chhaparkhat which encloses the marble cenotaph and is usually covered with a green cloth.
This chhaparkhat is inlaid with beautiful mother of pearl designs. There is such a lot of carving done on the marble tomb that it seems as if it is made of ivory. The plinth has ornamentation of mosaic with yellow and black marble which has been arranged is beautiful geometrical patterns.
