Tansen Baradari

T

he house with twelve doors

Tansen was one of the nine gems of Akbar’s court and was the court musician and singer. He is known to be an unmatched master in the art of Hindustani classical music. Fatehpur Sikri – Tansen’s Baradari gets its name from the fact that it has twelve doors. The building is single storied and rectangular in shape. There are three doorways on each side making it a total of twelve. However, many historians dispute the fact that Tansen actually lived in this house. The major reason behind this dispute is that the size of the house is too small for a nobleman of Tansen’s stature and importance. It has one hall that is oblong in shape and there are no attachments which were the regular norms like a separate room for ladies and a toilets or baths.

Fatehpur Sikri – Tansen’s Baradari is a hall which is surrounded by a veranda with pillars on all sides. The interiors of the hall are very simple which again point to the fact that it could not have been a nobleman’s residence. Inside the hall there is a wagon vaulted ceiling and flat roof. However, some ornamentation has been done on the exterior walls with elegant marble and buff sandstone inlay work. The designs on these inlay patterns are geometrical like hexagons and pointed stars.
