The houses of Abul Fazl and Faizi behind the Jama Masjid

T

he residences of the the two scholar brothers of Akbar’s court. There are two residence buildings on the northern side of the Jama Masjid which historians believe were  the houses of Abul Fazl and Faizi, his brother.

The Fatehpur Sikri – the houses of Abul Fazl and Faizi are made of red sandstone and are very similar in design, plan and layout. The building which lies to the south west is said to be the residence of Abul Fazl. The building is single storied and has a Tibara Dalan or verandah.

In the verandah there are two openings in the front and four stylized and carved columns. The capitals of the columns have flutes and beautiful brackets which support the lintels of the roof and make it look quite impressive. There are two small chambers on both sides of the building and lead to the roof.

In the houses of Abul Fazl and Faizi, the central room is the largest one and oblong in shape with three doors which have flat tops. The central arch is broader and spandrels which have been ornamented with beautiful rosettes.

It is said that the ceilings of the verandah and main room were painted with bright colors, but these colors have disappeared with passing time. There is a flight of steps leading to the upper storey.

The upper storey has two suites of rooms which are connected by a gallery. There is a staircase that leads to the baths and toilets towards the southwest from the upper storey.
