[#bar-a]Hampi's traditional 'guest houses' are located in Hampi village behind the Hampi Bazaar area. Very popular among Backpackers and budget travellers.
These guesthouses are rudimentary mom-and-pop enterprises operated out of their humble homes.
Go for it, if you like are looking for basic budget accommodation with character, and not very particular about typical hotel-like conveniences.
Modern style homestays are located in Kadirampura ( also called New Hampi) village. As the name says, this is a relatively new village after many homes offering homestays from Hampi Bazaar area was relocated.
Kadirampura is a bit off, but equally distanced (~3 km) from the popular areas: Sacred Center ( Hampi Bazar area ) the Royal Center (Lotus Mahal area).
If you are looking for homestays with parking facility, relatively tidy rooms & modern baths, Kadirampura is the place.
Kadirampura lacks the spooky & rudimentary vibe of Hampi Bazaar & Virupapur Gadde guesthouses. But the village ambient and relatively modern homestays are the gains of this option.
[#bar-b]Anegundi village across the river has a few homestays with incredible rustic character. Take a coracle ride from Vittala Temple ferry point to reach Anegundi. If you're driving, take the Bukkasagara Bridge to reach Anegundi. This area is off from the bustle of Hampi.
[#bar-b]This is the erstwhile 'hippy hideout' of Hampi. Most of the accommodations here are now closed ( relocated to other places). If you're still looking for accommodations & restaurants with such vibes, try the shacks in and around the Sanapura village ( located 3km west of Virupapur Gaddi)
[#bar-a]Those looking for better travel conveniences, look for a good hotel in Hospet town. The town a 30min rickshaw drive (13km) from Hampi.
Consider this plan. You set out from the hotel in the morning for the excursion to Hampi sites. Return by evening after the sightseeing to the cosy comfort of the hotel bed. Repeat the same the next day. Catch the night train/bus or drive out of the town. If this is the Hampi itinerary in your mind, a hotel in Hospet town will fit the bill well.
[#bar-b]Kamalapura, about 4km south of Hampi is the sweet spot between Hampi village and Hospet town.
Sweetspot, because Kamalapura has a couple of good hotels - the KSTDC run Mayura Bhuvaneshwari and Clarks Inn with indoor swimming pool. Both are much sophisticated than the rudimentary guesthouse scene of Hampi Bazaar area.
Kamalapura is reasonably close to the main attractions of Hampi.
While Hampi village is in the Royal Center portion of Hampi sites, Kamalapura is just a short stroll from the Royal Centre of Hampi.
Those traveling with family to explore Hampi, and looking for a better tradeoff between the rudimentary Hampi accommodations and the distant Hospet town, Kamalapura is the answer.

The history of Chalukyas is a bit complicated with controversies and ambiguities ; and often riddled with myths and legends. Complicated, because there were many dynasties ( to be specific three ) shared the name Chalukya. Before going further into this, let's first see where was this Chalukya Empire, as it is often referred, existed in India. Those of you with an understanding of the India's geography , imagine the Indian heartland bordered by two rivers - Narmada in the north and Kaveri in the south. Well, what lies between these two rivers was practically the span of Chalukyan Empire at its peak.
