Tiruttani constitutes one of the 6 padaiveedu Temples (War base of Lord Muruga). The site represents where Lord Subramanya stayed after destroying the demon Surapadman.
Tiruttani temple has many specialities compared to the other Padaiveedu temples.
[#dot]The 365 steps to the hilltop shrine represents the days of a year.
[#dot]The shrine of the procession deity is in a mandap made of 1 lakh Rudrakshas.
[#dot] Thiruthani is the fifth Padaiveedu. After destroying demon Sura in Tiruchendur, Lord Muruga came to Thiruthani. His fury cooled and He became smiling and peaceful ( in Shanta Swarupi form).
[#dot] It is at Thiruthani Indira gifted his white elephant as a wedding gift to Deivanai, the consort of the god Kartikeya.
[#dot] In the place of a peacock (usually in all Murugan temples), its is an elephant in front of the sanctum sanctorum at Thiruthani.
[#dot]Also the Vahanas (mount of the deities) always faces the Lord in the sanctum. In Thiruthani temple, the elephant faces the opposite side.
[#dot]Surasamharam (destroying the demon Surapadman) is not celebrated in Thiruthani temple.
